Description

Tuapapa is a Māori word meaning foundation, base, or underlying layer. The thing that everything else is built upon.

This gym console was designed with that idea in mind.

The original brief was for a client’s home gym: a low, grounded piece that could organise yoga mats, shoes, blocks, and equipment without introducing visual noise into the space. The result was something deliberately calm and architectural. A piece that sits close to the floor, holds weight comfortably, and creates order without asking for attention.

Built from solid New Zealand Walnut, the Tuapapa Console is composed as a series of modular sections that read as one continuous form. Open shelving keeps everything accessible, while the mass of the timber gives the piece a sense of permanence and stability. Joinery is simple and intentional, with handcut dovetails on the outer corners and shadow gaps punctuating the vertical dividers.

While it began life as gym storage, the design easily translates to other uses. It works just as naturally as a media console, record storage, shoe storage, or low shelving in a living space. Wherever a grounded, unobtrusive foundation is needed.

Like all my work, Tuapapa is made to order. Proportions, timber, and internal layout can be adjusted to suit the way you live.
